Our nursery values the individuality of all of our children. We are committed to giving all our children every opportunity to achieve their full potential. We do this by taking account of children’s varied experiences and needs. We offer a broad and balanced curriculum, and have high expectations of all children. The well-being, attitudes and achievements of all our children matter.

Aims

• We aim not to discriminate against anyone, be they staff, pupil or parent, on the grounds of gender, race, disability (including medical needs), sexual orientation, gender reassignment, religion/belief, age, attainment or background (including family circumstances).
• We aim to promote the principle of fairness and justice for all through the education that we provide in our nursery. We recognise that doing this may entail treating some children differently.
• We seek to ensure that all children have equal access to the full range of educational opportunities provided by the nursery.
• We constantly strive to remove any forms of indirect discrimination that may form barriers to learning for some groups of children.
• We aim to ensure that all recruitment, employment, promotion and training processes are fair to all, and provide opportunities for everyone.
• We aim to challenge personal prejudice and stereotypical views whenever they occur.
• We value each child's worth, celebrating the individuality and cultural diversity of our school community, and showing respect for all minority groups.
• We are aware that prejudice and stereotyping are often caused by poor self-image and by ignorance. Through positive educational experiences, and support for each individual's legitimate point of view, we aim to promote positive social attitudes and respect for all.
• We aim to promote fundamental British values identified as democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty and mutual respect and tolerance of those with different faiths and beliefs.

Objectives

Objective 1:         To ensure all groups of children, with a focus on disadvantaged, SENd and ethnic groups, make at least expected progress from their own starting points.

Objective 2:           To continue to prepare children for a life in modern Britain by reinforcing through the school’s curriculum and the self-regulation policy.

The Equality Act 2010 protects people from discrimination on the basis of protected characteristics and makes it unlawful for the responsible body of a school to discriminate against, harass or victimise a pupil or potential pupil:

• in relation to admissions,
• in the way it provides education for pupils,
• in the way it provides pupils access to any benefit, facility or service, or
• by excluding a pupil or subjecting them to any other detriment.

Every person has several of the protected characteristics, so the Act protects everyone against unfair treatment.

In order to ensure that all pupils are protected from discrimination, the school collects information on protected characteristics.

The Headship Team and Governors at Tunstall Nursery School will regularly review how well we achieve these aims with regards the protected groups under the Equality Act (race, disability, gender, gender reassignment, age, pregnancy and maternity, marital status, sexual orientation and religion and belief. )
